COLONY SETTLEMENT SERVICES

Colony Settlement Services provide programs and services to support the settlement of humanitarian entrants to the south of Tasmania. The majority of new arrivals in the last 5 years have come from African countries and are often unfamiliar with Australian systems and values. Services such as ours have been funded to support new arrivals access services, navigate our systems and adjust to the language and cultural differences of their new country.

The Engaging Communities program

The Engaging Communities Program provides a case work service aimed at improving African refugee's self-sufficiency and supports people to overcome barriers to successful settlement.

The Engaging Communities program focuses on individual case work for humanitarian entrants from Africa. The program is also establishing a peer mentoring service and aiming to increase the capacity of mainstream service providers to provide culturally responsive service by the distribution of fact sheets, information provision, promotion of training opportunities and referral follow-up.

In the year 2005/6 Engaging Communities supported 88 Humanitarian entrants and their family members.

The Newly Arrived Youth Support Service

The Newly Arrived Youth Support Service (NAYSS) provides culturally responsive services for newly arrived young people aged 12 to 21, and their families, with a refugee background. The service aims to connect clients with education, training, employment, family and the community.

NAYSS offers a mix of individual, family and group work, and community development projects to support young people to create a successful future in Australia, while understanding and remembering the significance of family culture, values and identity. NAYSS assists young people in overcoming barriers to fully participate in the Australian community.

In the year 2005/6 NAYSS provided support to 110 young people and their families.
