An innovative way to give back and be part of the solution by a home owner in Kettering

Kettering home owner Angus Hohenboken, has negotiated a deal with his real estate agent to donate 1% of the sale of his home to Colony 47.

We often say that the whole community has a part to play in ending homelessness and inequality and Colony 47 is constantly amazed by the innovation and generosity in our community.
*Over the years Angus and his partner Anna have made their Kettering property available to people who didn’t have a long list of rental references or were on lower incomes.

“It was around the same time of reports that people had been forced to live in tents at the Hobart Showgrounds and the young man started tying jackets around trees for people who needed them,” Angus said.

“Those stories gave me a stronger awareness of the problems Hobart was facing with its housing pressures and homelessness.”
“There has been a property boom in Hobart, but it is only a select few that benefit from that,” Angus said.
“There is an opportunity there for the benefits to be shared a bit wider.
“When we decided to sell the property, we started to wonder what we could do that would have a positive impact.”
After doing some research, Angus settled on Colony 47, an organisation that he said delivers “appropriate responses to the problems”.

“Of course, there are a lot of organisations that do great work,” he said.
“The young man with the jackets inspired me to do something, and if we can similarly inspire others it would increase the impact of our donation.

“If there was a snowball effect that helped to make a bigger difference, that would be fantastic.”
Angus’s home at 38 Ferry Road at Kettering is listed with Nest Property and priced at $445,000+. He will donate 1 per cent of the sale price to Colony 47, half paid by him and the other half by Nest.
Todd Pepper, property marketing consultant with Nest Property, said the agency was more than happy to be involved with Angus’s initiative.

“It’s not just about the funds to help Colony 47, it’s also a chance to put a spotlight on the important work the organisation does to help Tasmanians that are struggling,” Todd said.

Colony 47’s manager of housing and homelessness solutions, Didi Okwechime, said addressing homelessness should be a “whole-of-community” response where everyone plays their part.
She said the Hohenboken family’s idea was a simple, effective way to have a real impact.
“While 1 per cent might not sound like a huge sum, it can make a huge difference,” she said.
“Imagine if everyone did the same.”

Colony 47 celebrates its national Human Rights Award and Tasmanian Community Achievement Awards in 2018

Over the past month, Colony 47 has been recognised as a semi-finalist by the Tas Community Achievement Awards and on Friday the 14 December, Colony 47 attended the national 2018 Human Rights Awards in Sydney as a Community Organisation Award finalists.

Such was the pride in her team, Colony 47 Housing Connect Front Door Coordinator Bella Fountain, undertook the extensive nomination process to acknowledge the important work they do every day.

“Our team help people apply for public housing, access support for private rentals, find a bed for the night and support people through very difficult times in their lives, it is important work and I am very proud of them”, said Ms Fountain.

Colony 47 Housing Connect was nominated for the Community Organisation Human Rights Award for being at the forefront of identifying and addressing the complex needs of socially isolated and vulnerable Tasmanians since 1973.

62 organisations from around the country were nominated for their valuable contribution to the community and Colony 47 Housing Connect are extremely proud to be recognised as one of the 5 finalists.

In addition to this incredible, national recognition, Colony 47 received three nominations for the Tasmanian Community Achievement Awards.

Winter Emergency Support Coordinator Christina Augustine, was a semi-finalist for the Heather & Christopher Chong Outstanding Achiever Award.

Housing Solutions Executive Manager Ndidi Okwechime was recognised as a semi-finalist for the valuable contribution to housing and homelessness services in Southern Tasmania.

Youth Solutions Executive Manager Glen O’Keefe also accepted the semi-finalist Community Group of the Year Award for The Kooparoona Niara Cultural Trail on behalf of Colony 47. The Kooparoona Niara Cultural Trail, runs along the banks of the Meander River in Deloraine, sharing and celebrating local Aboriginal culture and history with the community.

Colony 47 would like to congratulate all the nominees, semi-finalists and winners, who choose to commit themselves to making the world a better place.

And thank you to the Tasmanian Community Awards and Human Rights Awards for recognising our amazing organisation and the incredible work our people and our consumers do every day to make our community stronger.

Over 100 community members attend the Eureka Clubhouse Mental Health Week Breakfast

The Clubhouse hosted its annual Mental Health Week breakfast on Tuesday 19th October 2018, with 107 people participating in the annual event.

Among the guests were several Members of Parliament  including the Ministers Michael Fergusson and Elise Archer, the  Speaker of the House of Assembly, Sue Hickey, Josh Willie MLC, Sarah Lovell MLC and Scott Bacon MHA and representatives of twenty-eight different organisations.

Colony 47 Chief Executive, Danny Sutton highlighted that the theme for Mental Health Week at Eureka Clubhouse was to focus on ‘who’s your mate who keeps you strong?’

At the breakfast Eureka Clubhouse members and our University of Tasmania social work student  discussed their mates who kept them strong.

Thank you to everybody who participated and a big thank you to the Mental Health Council for providing the funds that enabled the Clubhouse to host this event.

Staff, Stakeholder & Community Celebration Event 2018

On 5th November Colony 47 held its second annual Staff, Stakeholder and Community Celebration.

Colony 47 hosted around 80 community partners, board and staff at Blundstone Arena to update partners on its direction and to recognise shared achievement over the past 12 months.

Colony 47 were able to recognise the contribution and support of people across its network including in three key areas, consumers, collaborators and community partners. The following awards were presented as part of the event

  • Anglicare, Catholic Care, Hobart City Mission, Salvation Army & Housing Tasmania were recognised for housing and providing support for over 100 Tasmanian through its Winter Emergency Support initiative.
  • Richmond Fellowship Tasmania & The Link were recognised for supporting over 100 people to transition to the NDIS through its Project ReachABLE initiative.
  • UTAS Institute for Social Change were recognised for developing and implementing Social Return on Investment approach to understanding the social value created by its services.
  • Backswing was recognised for its innovative Empowering Youth Program in Sorell, Hobart, Glenorchy and Huonville.
  • The Department of Premier and Cabinet were recognised for their ongoing financial support for the annual Christmas Lunch for over 300 Tasmanians;
  • Hydro Tasmania was recognised for its sponsorship of healthy lifestyle and education programs for young women at the Mara House womens shelter;
  • RACT were recognised for their sponsorship of learner driver training for over 60 young people through its Young Driver Education Program
  • Telstra were recognised for contributing laptops for young people to support their education whilst living in the Colville Place youth at risk service
  • City of Hobart were recognised for supporting the young women at Mara House through its City of Hobart Volunteer Program.
  • Da Angelo’s Ristorante was recognised for its collection of over $30,000 as part of its Dollars for Change Program.
  • Young people in the empowering youth and Mara House services were recognised for their achievements in developing new initiatives and in supporting in representing clients in the selection of Colony 47 staff.

Colony 47 leads Advantaged Thinking nationally

In 2018, Colony 47 was selected as a national lead agency for implementing an international best practice approach to client centred service design, Advantaged Thinking.

In September 2018, Colony 47 invited its collaborative partners including government, staff and industry stakeholders to attend a special presentation by the UK Founder of Advantaged Thinking, Colin Faulkner.

Colin has been working extensively with Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) and Colony 47’s in partnership to embed the theories of Advantaged Thinking into our client centred practices across the programs of Colony 47.

Colin presented a Masterclass on Friday 28 September, providing background around the development of Advantaged Thinking theory and examples of how programs and clients have benefitted from this wholistic and inclusive approach.

Advantaged thinking ensures that people are not seen as having problems to be solved, but as having strengths for development and investment, defining people by their assets, aspirations and potential with a focus on working together to find sustainable solutions.

Colin’s presentation to stakeholders was followed by his review of Colony 47 services solutions that were presented by the organisations Advantaged Thinking Champions.

The presentations reported on how the services are developing initiatives using the Advantaged Thinking framework to improve service outcomes clients.

Colony 47 will use Advantaged Thinking concepts to redefine and embed client centred service design into its day to day work and will look to share its achievements and learnings with the community in the years ahead.

National Employers Reference Group

Colony 47 attended the inaugural National Employers Reference Group (NERG) Meeting on Monday 14 May at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Sydney to represent the success and challenges of youth employment in Tasmania.

Colony 47 CEO Danny Sutton said that sponsoring Di Underwood from Wrest Point who discussed the experience of employers in Tasmania, and the challenges of employing youth.

“Young people can be particularly disadvantaged in our community due to low incomes, unaffordable housing options, low levels of educational attainment and lower levels of employment,” said Mr Sutton.

“Whilst we are focussing on the needs of our young people we also need to work together with employment providers to make it easier to give young people a chance.”

National Employers Reference Group  forum was Chaired by Sara Caplan, CEO of PwC’s Skills for Australia, and attended by employers from around the nation along with their Transitions to Work Community of Practice members.

A sketch artist was present on the day to visually capture the discussion. The fascinating illustration and photos have been uploaded to the Forum section of the Transition to Work Community website.

Colony 47 will be hosting the next Community of Practice meeting to be held in Hobart later this year on Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 October 2018.

National Homelessness Week 2018

“Ending Homelessness Together” is the message for all Tasmanians during National Homelessness Week, 6-12 August 2018.

Led by Shelter Tasmania, the Southern Housing Sector have partnered with Local Government and other service providers to create a program of events that call on the community to get involved.

Throughout the week, a video and sound scape will be installed at locations around the Hobart, Glenorchy and Clarence City Councils providing a platform for people who are experiencing homelessness to share their story.

The projections will highlight the most current facts about homelessness in Tasmania and the different ways people are affected by it.

Homelessness can happen to anyone and it is important that we get the message out to those people who are experiencing homelessness for the first time so that they can get the help they need.

Colony 47 is the Front Door for housing and homelessness services in southern Tasmania and together with our collaborative partners; Catholic Care, Anglicare, Salvation Army and Hobart City Mission we are working to ensure that people in Tasmania have access to housing that is affordable, safe, secure and appropriate to their needs.

Colony 47 Transitions Aboriginal Community Pathways Program to Tasmanian Aboriginal Elder’s Council.

Colony 47 is transitioning the service delivery of the Aboriginal Community Pathways Program to the Elders Council of Tasmania Aboriginal Corporation.

Martin Hay, the Community Pathways Program Coordinator said it was fantastic that the Elders Council had applied and were successful in their bid to continue developing the program into the future.

“It has been a real honour to work with the Community and create such a dynamic and successful program for Aboriginal people,” said Mr Hay.

“This has been a fantastic program for Aboriginal people in Tasmania and there have been some great highlights with the success of the Deloraine Cultural Trail, Kooparoona Niara Cultural Trail and NAIDOC Week celebrations over its time. NAIDOC week has grown from attendance of 100 in 2015 to in excess of 400 in 2017.”

This year we have celebrated Reconciliation Week 2018 at a breakfast hosted by the Elder’s Council on Tuesday 29 May. Former Australian Human Rights Commission, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner (2009-2016), Mick Gooda, was a guest speaker at the breakfast and his insights were welcomed by over 100 people who attended.

Colony 47 is very proud of the achievements of Community Pathways Program and looks forward to following its progress into the future.

Launch of Youth at Risk Accommodation Service: Colville Place

Tackling youth homelessness

Today, Roger Jaensch MP launched a new nine unit youth at risk accomodation in Hobart. It will provide residential based support and other support services for young people aged 12-15 who are at risk of, or already experiencing, homelessness.The new facility will create a safe and supportive environment, providing both intensive and specialist support for these young Tasmanians.

In March 2018 the Tasmanian Government awarded Colony 47 a contract to provide services in a new purpose-built facility in Hobart for youth at risk of homelessness between the ages of 12 and 15.

The facility is one of a number of youth focussed initiatives by the Tasmanian Government included in its Affordable Housing and Youth at Risk Strategies.

In recognition of the work of the founder of Colony 47 Jim Colville we have been delighted to be able to name the new site, Colville Place.

Jim was a staunch advocate for the needs of young people in the 70’s and 80’s as they sought recognition as a key group with needs in the community.

Colville Place will be a 24 – hour crisis accommodation service that takes referrals for young people who are at risk of homelessness.

The focus will be on supporting the young people to achieve their goals through wrap around services, that work with them to:

  • re-engage with education and vocational training
  • re-engage with family;
  • develop daily living skills;
  • develop relationships; and
  • connect with people and supports that can assists them to achieve their goals.

To support these outcomes, Colony 47 will have a number of its existing services work within the new facility with the young people including:

  • the Reconnect service which targets the needs of young people at risk of homelessness;
  • the Parents and Kids Together service which works on a project basis to connect young people and their families; and
  • the Transition to Work service which can support young people to access future employment opportunities.

Colony 47 will be accepting referrals for Colville Place towards the end of May 2018, so we can continue to support young people at risk of homelessness to achieve their goals in life.

A project team led by Didi Okwechime and Toby Stoddart is currently undertaking the recruitment and operational implementation activities required to welcome the new clients in May 2018.

One of the key planks of the service will be the adoption of the UK Foyer model as a framework for the implementation of the service.

The Foyer model develops a positive culture for the clients which focusses on their strengths and also aligns their goals with positive educational and employment outcomes.

Colony 47 is partnering with the Brotherhood of St Laurence in the implementation of Advantaged Thinking, a framework for the strengths based approach for the young people.

Learner Driver Partnership with RACT

Tia is a young person in regional Tasmania with goals and aspirations to become a youth worker, but limited public transport and training options meant that not having a licence was one of her biggest challenges.

Thanks to the support of RACT, Colony 47’s Transition To Work (TTW) project now provides driving lessons for young people like Tia, who are working hard to achieve their goals.

Like many young people entering the workforce, Tia’s confidence had been rattled by unsuccessful employment experiences, but she didn’t let that stop her approaching TTW.

With the help of her Youth Development Coach, Tia developed a pathway towards her goal and the first step was to obtain her driver’s licence.

To begin with she didn’t think she could achieve her first goal.

“I was experiencing depression and anxiety and I didn’t have any money to pay for driving lessons.”

The RACT Learner Driver Package included 4 hours of driver training and access to the L2 assessment with the instructor she had already worked with.

After successfully achieving her first goal, Tia’s confidence is building and she is gaining momentum.

Whilst working towards her P1, she has commenced the Young Mum’s Program at Claremont Collage so she can continue to work towards her TCE whilst keeping her goal of becoming a Youth Worker in clear site.
